De-Phazz   Detunized Gravity is an electronic tour de force. From dubby tracks like "Between 2 Thieves" to lush, trip-hoppy affairs like "Cut the Jazz" to the drum 'n' bass flavors of tunes like "Nameless Life" to the almost-acid-jazz of "No Jive", De-Phazz, alias for DJ/Producer Pit Baumgartner, does it all and does it well. It's refreshing in an age of such acute pigeonholing to find an artist who manages to defy musical labeling so completely. Each track on DG is a synthesis of elements from the full spectrum of current electronic styles. And while a given composition might draw more heavily from one genre than another, De-Phazz is to be commended for the way his music manages to draw disparate elements into harmony. The disc's masterpiece is "Roses" -- its dreamy quality reminds me of Goldie's Timeless somewhat (although the breaks are less "cut up"). Its pulsing synth melody has the effect of light rain falling on the nape of your neck, the lush pads wash over you like the sea and the subdued mantra-like vocal line is the perfect driving force for a piece that is driven by subtlety. Listening to Detunized Gravity is a great way to spend 70 minutes of your life.
