There's nothing more worrisome than a quartet of smart metal fanatics. First off, they know what makes you retch in disgust, and they're more than happy to exploit those issues. Next, they know what you'll find offensive, bucko. You see, it's shit like this that keeps getting me in trouble –- big fucking trouble. I remember blasting some heinous death metal at the tender age of 15 and having my parents wonder where they went wrong, my classmates wondering what substance(s) I was on and girls just staying way the fuck away from me. You'd think I'd have learned by now... As Choice Cuts' grisly cover accidentally crosses the sight of my significant other, here we go again, with her questioning my taste and lack of decency and raising the almighty question, "What will our kids think when they see stuff like this?" Ah, death metal...it still shakes the nerves of the ones I love, and more importantly, I don’t have any spying kids’ eyes to worry about -– yet.

So, if you're still reading this after examining Choice Cuts' cover, the soon-to-be sawed off baby’s head probably didn't drive you elsewhere. So you say you have a strong stomach, eh? Fortunately, we've still got some music to analyze, and Impaled's sickly sense of humor does wonders with these demo versions from their debut CD, a couple of cover tunes and a few unreleased numbers for those in dire need of the ultimate Impaled fix. Prominently anchoring the disc are an assortment of crushing numbers, including the sizzling "Nightsoil" and the old school flavored "Until Death". The latter has a definite bent towards the demonic, guttural growling of Deicide crossed with the speed of Roadrunner faves, Pestilence. A classic cover of Carcass' "Carneous Cacoffiny" zips out a riff-hungry testament to the almighty Kings of Medicinal Metal.

The several demo-version and unreleased tunes included here provide a sinister amount of bass-heavy doom without sacrificing production quality. By no means would Impaled dare offer you, the loyal fan, filler material as a way to complete a CD. Like any good alternate version should, numbers like "Spirits of the Dead" and "From Here to Colostomy" document a step in these tracks' evolution, while still being able to mow you over and deftly spray your guts out the side and onto the lawn.

There's no doubt that Impaled will provide a shock to your entire nervous system. Whether it's the gruesome lyrics, the uncouth cover art or the straightforward offensiveness of the music, this fearsome foursome easily outdoes the majority of death and black metal bands currently on the scene --in musicianship as well as with its aural extremity. Can I help it if Impaled's disgusting sense of humor is right in line with my own? It's not my fault that the ruthless riffs and revolting lyrics remind me that some people still do dare to cross society's imaginary morality line. So damn all of you members of Impaled. Are you trying to ruin my life or something?
