Long ago, in a land far away, one could don a fresh Sunny Day Real Estate shirt, and Converse sneakers and grow one's sideburns long, while discussing how certain bands could capture emotional distress in the same way that T.S. Elliot once did. Yes, on planet 1995, one could partake in such activities and still retain a sense of self respect. But in case you haven't noticed, the great emo backlash has long since begun; indie-pop is in and profuse discussions about "feelings" are out.
I have opened this review with that recollection to remind the reader that there was a time when drawn-out vocals and self-consciously dynamic breakdowns were musically relevant and somewhat forward-moving.
Context is a decisive factor in appreciating this self-titled Red Stars Theory retrospective. The CD encompasses two out of print releases -- the RxRemedy 7" and the Deluxe Records 10" -- both recorded in 1995, prior to the addition of full-time violinist Seth Warren. Engineered by Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic, the disc does an excellent job of documenting the auspices of the then up-and-coming band -- and displays, to a much greater extent than their later albums, the band's connection to other members of the mid-'90s Northwest scene (Red Stars Theory shares members with Modest Mouse and 764-Hero).
While these early recordings pale in comparison to the orchestral dream-pop sound the band would later establish, they are by no means a total wash. The best moments here blend hypnotic, Diary-esque vocal stylings with transient crashing guitar interludes that seamlessly drift in and out of consciousness, forming an album as alluring as it is consistent.
Although the retrospective gets off to a forgettable start with "Broken Neck" -- a song that is clearly dated by its whiny crescendo -- the remainder of the disc grows steadily in musical strength, reaching a high point with the meandering instrumental gem "Think Piece".
Red Stars Theory is an altogether consistent and binding listen to what is, at worst, an exceptionally inventive and spirited "emo" band.
